The teacher selects and reads aloud a book to the entire class. During a school year, the teacher will select texts from a variety of genres. Generally, the teacher assembles students around them on a carpet in the classroom. Before reading, the teacher gives a brief introduction to the book, shares information about the author and illustrator, and may conduct a picture walk. During reading, the teacher can have students make predictions about what will happen next in the book. After reading, the teacher can ask comprehension questions, have students make text to self connections, and display the book in the classroom.
The read aloud serves as an effective model of fluent and expressive reading. Therefore, parents/guardians are encouraged to read aloud to their children every night.
